The use of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) in real-world applications is rising. This is most likely due to the ability of an sUAS to access areas quicker, safer and easier than a human. This rising demand of the sUAS, therefore, promotes opportunity for computer scientists to create programs that can help organizations complete tasks with less effort than before. This project was created to help complete the task of flying. Specifically, this project focused on whether an sUAS could autonomously fly a road in a forested environment. At first, the need to answer if a computer system could identify a road was paramount. Next, since mobile devices are used to control the sUAS, the ability to classify an image while maintaining control of the sUAS had to be determined. Finally, image classification is simply not enough, the output of the classification of the image must have such information as to help ascertain direction. The results are promising. The sUAS can classify images while providing continuous control of the sUAS to the user and the images are classified in such a way as to provide adequate information in determining direction. Future work includes having the sUAS decide direction.46 Resources
