This paper, the author examines two of Wesley's essays and relate them to his larger theological framework. These two essays are contained back-to-back in the eleventh volume of the third edition of his Works, and are entitled "Thoughts on the Present Scarcity of Provisions" and "Thoughts upon Slavery." In the first essay, published in 1773, Wesley attributed poverty and hunger around him to society. The second essay, published in `774, is Wesley's abridgment of a tract written by Anthony Benezet, but Wesley enclosed it fully and circulated it widely.
