‘Christ in Us: The Hope of Glory’
Col. 1:24–29; Acts 16:25–34
ABSTRACT
This graduation address at the 40th APNTS commencement examines the theme "Christ in Us: The Hope of Glory" (Colossians 1:24-29) through theological reflection and biblical narrative. The speaker contextualizes Paul's message to the Colossian church, which navigated competing worldviews of Roman imperial authority, Greek philosophy, and Jewish legalism—paralleling contemporary challenges faced by theological graduates.
The address employs Acts 16:25-34 as an exegetical lens to illuminate Paul's concept of embodying Christ. The Philippian imprisonment narrative demonstrates how Paul and Silas, despite severe persecution, proclaimed the gospel through hymns that contrasted Christ's kenotic obedience with imperial ideology. Their decision to forgo divinely-granted freedom to preserve their jailer's life exemplifies the practical outworking of "Christ in us"—prioritizing the enemy's welfare, resulting in conversion and reconciliation.
The address argues that "Christ in us" transcends received grace to constitute a transformative way of life characterized by self-emptying love and concern for others, even adversaries. The speaker challenges graduates to embody this Christological narrative in their diverse callings, asserting that authentic Christian witness manifests through concrete acts of sacrificial love that reveal the mystery of the gospel and transform relationships for God's glory.
